GROSSE ORCHESTRION WALZENSPIELDOSE MIT TROMMEL, GLOCKEN UND KASTAGNETTEN

LARGE ORCHESTRION CYLINDER MUSIC BOX WITH DRUM, BELLS, AND CASTANETS Switzerland, Sainte-Croix, c. 1885-1895 Rectangular fine-wood case featuring elaborate musical instrument marquetry on the lid and an internal glass dust cover; spring-driven cylinder mechanism. H. approx. 24 cm, W. 65 cm, D. 34 cm. Mechanism serial number 12535 stamped on the cylinder bearing block. The hinged lid features double stringing and polychrome marquetry depicting musical trophies-including French horns, blossoms, and ribbons. Precision Swiss brass movement with a two-part steel comb and brass cylinder; orchestrion features include a drum, three tuned brass bells, and castanets. The bells are fitted with strikers shaped like insects and finished with colored enamel. Features a sector-style tune indicator (numbered 1-10) backed with red felt, as well as a gilded decorative plaque on the comb bed. Original lithographed tune sheet depicting a Muse, putti, and bird motifs, with a handwritten list of ten musical pieces. Part. bumped and rubbed, lid exhibits veneer damage and abrasion. Mechanism starts when engaged, the play/stop mechanism is sticking. Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
