Description
LARGE DOUBLE-PEDAL CONCERT HARP 'J. & J. ERAT' PATENT HARP London, ca. 1835-1842 Spruce, maple, and walnut, partially gilded, finely fluted column with winged caryatids, brass action, metal pegs, engraved cover plate. H. 172, W. 90 cm. Marked on the side: 'J. & J. Erat, Patent Harp Manufacturers, London', No. '2148'. A high-quality, large-format concert harp with double pedals from the late Biedermeier or early Victorian period, featuring an elegant neoclassical design. In the early 19th century, the brothers Jacob (II) and James Erat ran one of London's most important harp workshops. Their father, Jacob Erat Sr., had previously worked as a master craftsman in the workshop of the famous harp maker Sébastien Érard, thereby establishing the Erat workshop's close connection to the modern double-pedal harp. Part. bumped and rubbed, damg on the lower back, strings incomplete; mechanics and function not tested. Literature: Cf. Rensch: *Harps and Harpists*, Bloomington 1989. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse.
