GERMAN BASS LUTE / THEORBO ALOIS SUTER Fountain, around 1868 Spruce top and maple body, twelve strings, swan neck, carved rosette, ivory inlays on the fingerboard. H. 126, w. 35, d. 16 cm. Lute label: 'Gabriel David Buchstetter, Lautten und Geigenmacher, Pedeponti propé Ratisbonam Anno 1754 Nr. 26 and 'Alois Suter 1868 Brunnen'. The German bass lute (also known as the guitar lute or baroque lute) is a historical stringed musical instrument that originated in Germany in the 18th century. It is characterized by its distinctive shape and lower range, which was specially designed for accompanying baroque music, especially in ensembles. Part bumped and rubbed, repaired Naefels, tuning required. Provenance: Private collection Brussels.
