Description
MAX LIEBERMANN (ATTRIBUTED) 1847 Berlin - 1935 ibid. ZANDVOORT, 1887 Oil on canvas, marouflaged. 16.5 x 23 cm (f. 34 x 28 cm). Dated and inscribed with location lower right. Framed. The painting depicts a section of the beach at Zandvoort, viewed from a slightly elevated perspective. The sandy shore is animated by numerous figures, rendered with a loose and confident brushstroke. The composition and painting style suggest that this is a plein-air study - likely unsigned for that reason. The stylistic approach, the impressionistic treatment of the subject, and the choice of motif are characteristic of artists from the first generation of Impressionism. Notably, Max Liebermann was actively working in Zandvoort in 1887, and as one of the leading figures of this movement, it is plausible that this sketch may have been executed by him or by an artist from his immediate circle. Provenance: Private collection.
