Description
HANS MÜLLER 1873 Vienna - 1937 ibid EQUESTRIAN STATUE OF KNIGHT CANGRANDE I DELLA SCALA Bronze, light patina, on rectangular plinth (H. 2 cm). Total H. 45, W. 36, W 13 cm, weight approx. 9.69 kg. On the back of the plinth, foundry mark 'KR' and inscribed 'M. Sch'. Cangrande I della Scala (1291-1329) was an important ruler of Verona from the della Scala family, who was known for his military successes and the expansion of his influence in northern Italy. He was a close friend and patron of the poet Dante Alighieri, who immortalized him in the "Divine Comedy." The equestrian statue of Cangrande I della Scala shows the knight in full armor sitting on a horse, holding a sword in one hand and the reins firmly in the other.
