HENRI LOUIS LEVASSEUR 1853 Paris - 1934 Paris 'LOÏE FULLER' (DANCER)* France, circa 1900 Chryselephantine; bronze with gold patina; face, arms, and leg carved from ivory. H. 27, W. 14, D. 11 cm; weight approx. 2.24 kg. Inscribed 'H. Levasseur' on the front of the plinth. Depiction of a young dancer (the famous American dancer Loïe Fuller, 1862-1928) in dynamic motion, wearing a sweeping, dramatically draped veil-like garment; her spectacular serpentine dances, performed with colored stage lighting, were among the iconic spectacles of the Belle Époque. A characteristic Art Nouveau sculpture by the French artist Henri Louis Levasseur, also titled 'Danseuse au voile' or 'Dancing Girl'. Min. bumped and rubbed, loss of paint.
