Boucher' on the side; foundry mark 'F. Barbedienne Fondeur' on the back. A powerful, naturalistic depiction of a muscular worker engaged in earthwork. The nearly unclothed man is shown wearing only a belt, gripping a shovel planted in the ground with both hands. Part. bumped and rubbed, loss of paint.
