BERLIN SCULPTOR Active early 20th century JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE IN A HOUSE COAT Bronze, dark brown patina. H. 51, W. 22, D. 19 cm; weight approx. 9.83 kg. Inscribed 'Goethe 1828' on the front; foundry mark 'H. Noack, Berlin-Friedenau' on the back of the plinth; after Christian Daniel Rauch (1777 Bad Arolsen - 1857 Dresden). Full-round bust of the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) wearing a characteristic coat and neckerchief, with hands clasped behind his back. Tall, square base with out-curving volute feet; richly decorated on all sides with allegorical reliefs and symbols from the worlds of poetry and theater. Minor nicks and loss of patina. Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
