Description
JEAN ANTOINE INJALBERT 1845 Béziers - 1933 Paris LARGE RECLINING NYMPH WITH GOAT ('PASTORALE') Bronze with dark brown patina, on an oval marble base. H. 49, W. 70, D. 33 cm. Titled 'Pastorale' and signed 'A. Injalbert' on the front. A finely modeled, fully sculptural group depicting a reclining nude nymph with a goat. The young woman is posed gracefully on a naturalistic rocky ledge draped with a pelt; her upper body is raised, and her gaze is turned to the side. Behind her, a goat nestles closely against her figure. A high-quality "Salon bronze" of museum caliber by the French sculptor Jean-Antoine Injalbert, a student of Augustin-Alexandre Dumont and winner of the Prix de Rome in 1874; he became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1905. His significant public works include the allegorical sculptures on the Pont Mirabeau in Paris. The title 'Pastorale'-derived from the Latin *pastor* (shepherd)-denotes an idealized depiction of rural pastoral life and nature. Shows some rubbing and minor impact marks; loss of patina; marble base has minor edge chips and stress cracks. Provenance: Acquired in Spain - Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
