MARIUS JEAN ANTONIN MERCIÉ 1845 Toulouse - 1916 Paris DAVID BEFORE THE BATTLE Bronze, dark patina, on a round plinth and base (H. 7 cm). H. 80, W. 29, D. 34 cm. Inscribed on the plinth 'A Mercie' and foundry mark 'F. Barbesdienne Fondeur', on the reverse 'HH' and '40', after the original in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris. Fully sculpted representation of David standing in tense anticipation before the battle against Goliath, holding the slingshot in his left hand, his right hand resting on his hip, a discarded bag and a sling at his feet. Partial loss of patina and some damage.
