JOSEF FRANZ RIEDL 1884 Vienna - 1965 Vienna 'CUPID WITH A LARGE LUTE' Bronze, dark patina, on an oval plinth and marble base (H. 2 cm). H. 21, W. 26.5, D. 12.5 cm; weight approx. 3.9 kg. Inscribed on the plinth 'Jos. Riedl Wien' and bearing the foundry marks 'Real Vienna Bronze' and 'AW Trade Mark Made in Vienna'. Allegorical depiction of a standing Cupid (Amor) with his classic attributes-arrow, bow, and heart-as well as a lute, symbolizing love, harmony, and courtly musical culture. Part. bumped and rubbed; some loss of patina.
