XIAOBAI SU 1949 CHINA PLATE WITH ORNAMENTAL PATTERN (C. 1995) Oil on canvas, framed. 85 x 95 x 2.5 cm. One of Su Xiaobai's early works created during his time in Germany, this painting features Chinese cultural symbols, depicting a blue-and-white porcelain plate. In the 1990s, his subjects often included still lifes - interiors, walls, furniture, and objects - that evoked a strong sense of home and Chinese heritage. Under Su's brush, these still lifes are imbued with dynamic movement; their seemingly casual arrangement conveys a sense of ease, while the restrained color palette hints at both abstract art and the ethereal qualities of Chinese aesthetics. The artist told the collector that he had painted this work simply for the joy of the pattern, and that the white spot in the top right corner came to him spontaneously - almost like a thumbprint. The work is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. Overall in good condition.
