Description
AN O-YOROI ARMOUR Japan, early Showa period Metal/textile, etc.. H. ca. 150 cm. The armour comprises an iron cuirass (do) with plate kusazuri (skirt armour protecting the hips and thighs), shoulder guards (sode), armoured sleeves (kote) protecting the forearms and hands, and thigh guards (haidate) of black-lacquered leather with knee guards (hiza-ate). It is complete with a helmet. The face mask (menpo), in Nara style, is fitted with a moustache and lacquered red on the reverse. It is further equipped with a brocade silk kurijime-o cord and accompanied by a matching armour storage box (yoroibitsu) and a display stand. With traces of age. Provenance: From a private collection in Düsseldorf.
