Description
AN E-SHINO CHAWAN (TEA BOWL) Japan, early Edo period Stoneware. H. 7.3 cm, D. 13 cm. The chawan, of han tsutsu-gata type, has a low cylindrical form set on a slightly irregular ring foot (wa kodai). The grey body is covered with a thick beige, crackled glaze through which a reddish-brown iron oxide ground shows. The base and foot are partially unglazed. The decoration shows on one side reddish-brown overlapping circles and on the other irregular intersecting lines. It is accompanied by a tomobako (original wooden box), the lid with a paper label inscribed "Shino chawan".. With traces of age and use. Provenance: From a private collection in Düsseldorf.
