Part. old rest., old retouching. Frame. Prof. Dr Werner Sumowski writes in his expert opinion dated 13 June 1983: "The painting is a work by Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne (Delft 1589 - 1662 The Hague). It belongs to his later period, when he frequently executed religious scenes and illustrations of proverbs in grisaille or brown monochrome painting. A variant of the composition in the museum in Caen was exhibited in 1970-1971 in the exhibition Le siècle de Rembrandt at the Petit Palais in Paris (p. 226, no. 219, illustrated). Paintings by the artist are held, among others, in the museums of Amsterdam, Brussels, Dresden, Ghent, The Hague, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Rotterdam and Stockholm."
