Description
JAKOB PHILIPP HACKERT 1737 Prenzlau - 1807 San Piero di Careggio (Florence) ON THE MONTE VERGINE Pen and brush and brown ink, partly lightly washed on beige paper. 550 x 683 mm (visible size), 750 x 870 mm (frame) (original sheet size 558 x 690 mm, Nordhoff). Signed, dated and inscribed lower left: "a Monte Vergine Filippo Hackert f. 1795". Verso: Verso: inscribed on old paper label of Dom Galerie Ed. Arthur Schmidt Cologne: "Jacob Philipp Hackert (1737-1807) Original-Sepia-Aquarell Nr. 2131". Right margin and lower right corner slightly rubbed. Framed in passepartout and behind glass. 'Perhaps on his way back from Auletta to Naples the artist walked in a large arc in the direction of Avellino, which is dominated by the 1493 m high Monte Vergine. The mountain, which is part of the Partenio chain, is best known for the abbey founded here in the 12th century, which is still a popular pilgrimage destination today. The lost drawing, which has not been preserved in a photograph, is the first in a series of depictions Hackert dedicated to the wooded surroundings of the sanctuary (see cat. nos. 897-900); according to the auction catalogue, it shows a view of a rocky valley'. Nordhoff (op. cit., p. 363). Literature: Nordhoff, Claudia and Hans Reimer: Jakob Philipp Hackert 1737-1807. Verzeichnis seiner Werke. Volume II, p. 362f., no. 887. Provenance: Bergische company collection. Previously possibly Dom Galerie Ed. Arthur Schmidt Cologne. Auction catalogue no. L, Dessin anciens et modernes, Gutekunst & Klipstein, Bern, 21-22 June 1949, no. 618.
