THRONENDE MADONNA MIT CHRISTUSKIND*

ENTHRONED MADONNA WITH CHILD* Probably Cologne or France, 14th century. Carved ivory, framed. H. 8.5 x 5 cm, weight approx. 200g. Rare Gothic relief depiction of the enthroned Madonna with the Christ Child. The crowned Mother of God appears in solemn frontality as Queen of Heaven, while the child sits on her lap as Salvator mundi. The composition is surmounted by a finely crafted canopy with a finial and refers to the architectural style of High Gothic. The gable-shaped structure and the framing design are reminiscent of the iconographic tradition of Gothic diptych wings and small devotional altars, which were widespread in the Rhineland and France in the 14th century.
