SPÄTGOTISCHE MADONNA MIT CHRISTUSKIND

LATE GOTHIC MADONNA AND CHILD South German, c. 1520 Wood, carved in the round, polychromed and gilded, flattened at the back. H. 87, W. 28, D. 16 cm. Standing Virgin with a high forehead and long, cascading wavy hair, carrying the unclothed Christ Child in her arms; the Child nestles against His mother in an intimate gesture, reaching for her neck. The drapery features deeply carved, bowl-like folds and characteristically angular, broken creases. Minor chips and damage, losses to the polychromy, minimal woodworm traces, incomplete arms and legs, shrinkage cracks.
