Description
SEATED SAINT (PROBABLY THE MADONNA) Southern Germany, ca. 1480 Linden wood, sculpted in the round, polychromed and gilded, flattened and hollowed out on the back. H. 62, W. 31, D. 25 cm, weight approx. 5 kg. High-quality late Gothic seated figure of a female saint, presumably the Virgin Mary. The calm, dignified posture, the softly flowing folds of the robe, and the finely modeled head are characteristic of South German woodcarving from the second half of the 15th century. The figure was likely originally part of an altarpiece or a larger group of figures. Condition: damaged and restored; affected by woodworm; hands missing. Provenance: Acquired from Kunsthandel Klendauer, Wiesbaden.
