MONUMENTAL MADONNA ON THE CRESCENT MOON Presumably Belgium, early 19th century. Terracotta, fully modeled in the round, polychromed and gilded. H. approx. 220 cm, W. 80 cm, D. 65 cm. Large standing figure of the Immaculate Conception with hands clasped in prayer and long, flowing hair; her head is crowned. Mary stands upon the crescent moon, trampling the serpent that coils at her feet-a symbol of the triumph over Original Sin. Minor damage; tip of the crescent moon damaged and restored.
