RECUMBENT CHRIST FROM THE TOMB South German, likely c. 1460-1490 Limewood, carved in the round, polychromed, gilded, gesso ground; flattened at the back. H. 78, W. 19, D. 12 cm. Depiction of the deceased Christ in an extended recumbent pose, arms crossed over the body. Low-slung perizonium with taut, horizontally arranged folds. Head with closed eyes and long, wavy hair falling back. Areas of minor damage and wear; restored; losses to the polychromy.
