CRUCIFIXION GROUP: CRUCIFIX, MARY, AND JOHN Alpine region, 18th century Wood, carved in the round, gilded, polychrome finish, flattened backs, metal haloes. Stepped wooden base painted black with gold-colored decorative lines. H. 90, W. 39, D. 17 cm. Complete three-figure crucifixion group featuring the crucified Christ flanked by Mary and St. John the Evangelist. Christ depicted in the "three-nail" type as *Christus mortuus* (dead Christ), with head inclined deeply to the side, eyes closed, and wearing a crown of thorns; the wound in his side is finely detailed, with traces of blood. A richly draped, gilded loincloth encircles his hips. To the left stands the grieving Mother of God, Mary, in a red robe and a blue mantle with gold trim, her hands clasped in prayer before her chest. To the right stands St. John the Evangelist in a green robe and red mantle, his right hand raised in an expressive gesture of lamentation. Minor chips and damage; restored; some loss of paint/gilding.
