SAINTED BISHOP OR CHURCH FATHER WITH A BOOK German, 17th century Wood, carved in the round, polychromed and gilded, flattened at the back. H. 67, W. 22, D. 16 cm. Standing figure of a sainted bishop in long vestments and wearing a mitre. He holds a closed book in his left hand, signifying the Gospel, scholarship, or ecclesiastical teaching. Minor chips and damage; restored; signs of woodworm infestation and shrinkage cracks.
