LARGE CORPUS CHRISTUS Italy, around 1400 Wood, sculpted, gilded, and polychromed. H. 148, W. 21, D. 18 cm. Expressive depiction of the crucified Christ with three nails, his head bowed and a finely crafted loincloth. The high-quality workmanship and remnants of the original paintwork testify to the figure's former presence in a sacred space. An early example of Italian devotional sculpture from around 1400. Partially preserved and damaged, with woodworm infestation, without arms.
