LARGE SAINT MARY MAGDALENE WITH OINTMENT JAR Southern Germany/Austria, 17th century Wood, sculpted, polychrome, gilded, flattened and hollowed out on the back, mounted on a board. H. 116, W. 63, D. 38 cm. Expressive Baroque depiction of Saint Mary Magdalene holding her characteristic ointment jar in her hands. Her slightly inclined head and the flowing folds of her robe lend the figure a graceful yet contemplative presence. The figure was probably once part of a larger altar or a devotional group depicting the Passion of Christ. Condition and description: bumps in the paint, gold abrasion, woodworm infestation. Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
