ITALIAN SCULPTOR Active in the 19th century GREAT SAINT AGATHA 1816 Ceramic, gilded and polychrome, hands carved from wood. H. 84, W. 43, D. 26 cm. Dated '1816' and inscribed '16:aprip I: Boppig' on the back. '16:aprip I: Boppig'. Depictions of Saint Agatha with her severed breasts - often presented on a platter - refer to her martyrdom and symbolise steadfastness in faith and the rejection of worldly desires. Partially preserved and damaged, loss of material, crown damaged, hands restored and affected by woodworm.
