GOTHIC SAINT URBAN Southern Germany/Alpine region, around 1500 Linden wood, sculpted, gilded, polychrome, flattened and hollowed out on the back, canvas overlay, on a pedestal. H. 45, W. 16, D. 14 cm, weight approx. 1 kg. Old collection label on the back. Late Gothic statue of Saint Urban I, pope and patron saint of winegrowers. Sculpted representation with tiara as papal attribute and a book as symbol of ecclesiastical doctrine. The calm, dignified posture and finely worked folds of the robe are characteristic of South German/Alpine carving. Partially preserved, loss of paint, gold abrasion.
