Description
ARCHANGEL MICHAEL Probably Kolinal School, Peru, 18th century .Huamanga stone. H. 30, W. 17, D. 6 cm, weight approx. 1.8 kg. Based on the original in the Museo de América in Madrid. Sculptural representation of the archangel Michael standing in warrior's attire, with a sword in his right hand and a shield in his left. Huamanga stone, a marble-like but softer and more translucent stone, began to be worked at the beginning of the colonial period (1533) and was named after the quarries in the province of Huamanga in the Ayacucho region.
