SIGNIERTE IKONE MIT DER GOTTESMUTTER VON WLADIMIR (WLADIMIRSKAJA)

A SIGNED ICON WITH THE MOTHER OF GOD OF VLADIMIR (VLADIMIRSKAYA) Russina, Ostashkovo, signed by Mikhail Potapov, circa 1700 Tempera on wood panel with double kovcheg. On the reverse, Cyrillic inscription: 'This depiction [.] (Christ?) Mikh[a]lo Potapov, son'. Partially restored. 27.3 x 23.5 cm. The icon painter Mikhail Potapov was mentioned in 1702 in the inscription on an icon of the Mother of God Hodegetria from the Trinity-Makaryev Monastery in Kalyazin near Tver. He may also have been related to the renowned dynasty of icon painters from Ostashkovo, whose roots go back to the mid-17th century.
