A RARE ICON SHOWING THE ARCHANGEL GARBIEL WITH A SILVER-GILT RIZA Russian, Moscow, Bogoroditse-Smolensk Novodevichy Convent, dated 1755 (icon), Russian, Moscow, 1787 (riza) Oil on wood panel. Realistically painted in sombre colours, the archangel shown full-length flanked by six selected saints. Overlaid with an elaborate repoussé chased and engraved silver-gilt oklad. The oklad with a round medallion at the lower edge with a Cyrillic inscription stating that the icon was painted in Moscow in 1755 at the Bogoroditse-Smolensk Novodevichy Convent. Marked with city hallmark, assayer's mark, alderman's mark and master's mark. Minimally restored. 34.3 x 26 cm.
