A VERY RARE AND VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE APPARITION OF THE APOSTLES PETER AND PAUL TO SAINT PETER, PRINCE OF THE HORDE Russian, Rostov, 17th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Gold ground. Depicting a rare episode from the vita of Saint Peter, Prince of the Horde (Pyotr Ordynsky). In an expansive landscape traversed by a river or lake, the Apostles Peter and Paul appear to the young Prince Peter. According to tradition, the apparition took place on the shore of Lake Nero near Rostov. The Apostles presented the prince with gold and silver and instructed him to build a church dedicated to them on that site. Peter, who according to tradition was descended from the ruling house of the Golden Horde and had converted to Christianity, subsequently founded a church near Rostov in honour of the Apostles Peter and Paul. This foundation later developed into the Petropavlovsky Monastery. The border partially restored. 30.5 x 26.5 cm.
