A VERY RARE AND VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE PROCESSION OF THE PRECIOUS AND LIFE-GIVING CROSS Greek, 18th century Tempera on wood panel. Finely executed in great detail. The finely painted garments made of gold. The cross applied with silver. Minor paint blisterings, minor losses. 49.7 x 36 cm. This type originated in a yearly ritual that took place in Constantinople, originally the chief center of Orthodoxy. The cross of Christ was carried out of the Church of Holy Wisdom and through the city. Then a spring was blessed with it to which the ill could come for healing. A chapel stood beside the spring.
