A VERY FINE AND SMALL ICON OF THE DORMITION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD (KOIMESIS) Russian, Moscow Armory Chamber, late 17th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The haloes made of gold, the garments with rich chrysography. Executed in extremely fine and detailed painting, with an asymmetrical arrangement of the Apostles around the bier of the Mother of God. Their expressive gestures are emphasized by the architectural framing of the composition. This mannerist enrichment with abundant detail and diagonally placed figures reflects Western European influences that entered Russian icon painting at the end of the 17th century. Comparable elements are found in numerous works of Kostroma masters, who developed a distinctive style combining local tradition with ornamental richness. Minor retouchings. 24.8 x 19.5 cm.
