A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING ST. JOHN THE FORERUNNER AS ANGEL OF THE DESERT WITH SILVER BASMA Russian, 17th century (icon), Russian, Kostroma, 1804 (basma) Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The borders overlaid with a silver basma, chased and repoussé with scrolling foliage. Marked with city hallmark, assayer's mark, 84 standard and master's mark. The background stripped to gesso, minor areas of retouching. 31.5 x 27 cm.
