A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE DESCENT INTO HELL Russian, 16th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Christ, encompassed within a mandorla in two shades of green, stands upon the broken gates of hell. He raises Adam from the dead, on the opposite side Eve kneeling, to the left Kings David and Solomon. The background and border stripped to gesso. Minor areas of retouching. 31.4 x 26.8 cm.
