A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE MOTHER OF GOD OF TIKHVIN Russian, Moscow, cirlce of the Armoury Chamber, early 18th century Tempera on wood panel. Two selected saints on the borders. The painting of the icon is plastic and colourful, in harmony with the artistic system of Moscow masters of the 1720s-1730s, who continued the traditions of the Armory Chamber. The interplay of light and shade is enhanced, while the idealized beauty of the faces of the Virgin and Child is distinctly individualized. The nimbi are adorned with engraved rays. Minor vertical crack on the upper border. 31.5 x 26.5 cm.
