A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE ELEOUSA MOTHER OF GOD Greek, Cretan, circa 1500 Tempera on wood panel. Against a gold ground, the Mother of God is portrayed half-length. The Virgin is dressed in a deep green chiton and a purple maphorion (mantle), the fringes and the hems of her garment rendered in gold. Christ is dressed in a chiton and a himation highlighted with chrysography. A bright red band is wrapped around his waist. He has put his right hand into his mother's and holds a closed scroll in his left hand. Minor areas of retouching. 32.5 x 25.8 cm.
