Description
AN IMPORTANT AND LARGE ICON OF ST. JOHN THE THEOLOGIAN IN SILENCE WITH SILVER RIZA Russian, Moscow, Circle of the Kremlin Armoury Chamber, circa 1700 (icon), Russian, Astrakhan, 1833 (riza) Single panel with two splines on the reverse. Egg tempera on gesso, haloes gilded, folds and ornaments of the garments highlighted in gold. Four selected saints on the borders: the Prophet Elijah, St. Eudokia, St. Sergius of Radonezh, and St. Hilarion. A finely executed depiction of the saint in an interior; through the window the Baptism of Christ is shown. The flesh tones are modelled in plasticity, while the garments are adorned with elaborate ornament. Riza damaged. Riza of repoussé silver. Stamped with city mark, assayer's mark, 84 standard and master's mark 'NK' in Cyrillic. 58 x 46.8 cm.
