AN IMPORTANT ICON SHOWING THE VLADIMIRSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD Russian, Moscow, early 16th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Supporting Christ and gesturing to him with her left hand, the Child embracing her and touching his cheek to her face while gazing into her eyes. The faces rendered with saturated nuances, Christ's red tunic and complimentary green band highlighted with gold striations, the Mother of God's maroon maphorion accented by dark lines and an orange hem. 31 x 25.3 cm. Provenance: Andreas Tostrup Urbye (1869-1955): A Norwegian civil servant and politician, he entered the diplomatic service and was stationed in Moscow from 1924 to 1939.
