Description
AN IMPORTANT ICON SHOWING ST. BASIL THE GREAT Russian, circa 1500 Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The saint is depicted in precious bishop's garments with striking geometric ornament of crosses. Inserted in a later panel (vrezka), the background and border stripped to gesso. 24.4 x 19.2 cm. Provenance: Andreas Tostrup Urbye (1869-1955): A Norwegian civil servant and politician, he entered the diplomatic service and was stationed in Moscow from 1924 to 1939.
