A MONUMENTAL ICON SHOWING THE DESCENT INTO HELL AND THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, circa 1700 Tempera on wood panel with double kovcheg. Finely executed on a gold ground. Christ trampling on the gates of hell, raising Adam, Eve and the other Righteous people in the centre, surrounded by events of the Passion cycle, rendered with sombre colours, accentuated with gold details. Minor vertical crack, minor losses, partially restored. 111.5 x 96.5 cm.
