A MONUMENTAL ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD OF KAZAN (KAZANSKAYA) AND HER MIRACULOUS DISCOVERY FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, circa 1800 Egg tempera on gessoed wood panel, gilded and silvered background with golden glaze, garment folds highlighted in powdered gold. Partially restored. 135.5 x 64.6 cm. The lower image field bears the inscription: "The Archbishop, together with the priests and all the clergy, with the military leaders and all the people of the city, went to the place where this holy image had wondrously appeared. And after venerating it, they took it up, carried it into the city, and placed it in the Church of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker."
