A MONUMENTAL ICON SHOWING CHRIST IN MAJESTY FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, 16th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Seated on an opulent throne and cushions, Christ is blessing and bearing the open Gospels. His face depicted in subdued earthly tones with white highlights. He is surrounded by an almond shaped area depicted in red. Throughout the mandorla cherubim can be seen. The blue glory decorated with seraphim, the red four-pointed star with the Apocalyptic symbols of the Evangelists. Vertical crack and horizontal crack restored. 91.5 x 65 cm.
