A MONUMENTAL ICON SHOWING ST. GEORGE KILLING THE DRAGON WITH SCENES FROM HIS MARTYRDOM 2nd half of the 20th century Tempera on wood panel with gesso ground with kovcheg. The details painted in gold. St. George is depicted in full military attire, complemented by a flowing red cloak, riding a strong white horse. The saddle is adorned with gold and jewel-encrusted bands. St. George holds the reins of his horse and thrusts his long lance into the open mouth of the winged dragon. The rescued Princess Elisaba stands at the gate of the tower, while several onlookers witness the miraculous event from the windows and battlements of the fortress. The background on the left shows a barren, mountainous landscape, contrasting with the densely structured architectural composition on the right, rendered mostly in muted pastel tones. Along the lower edge are 14 scenes illustrating the life and martyrdom of the saint. At the top, the Mother of God and John the Forerunner, along with other saints and angels, flank Christ. The background stripped to gesso, restorations. 119 x 84.3 cm.
