Description
A SMALL AND FINE ICON OF THE 'GREEK MOTHER OF GOD' WITH SILVER-GILT OKLAD Russian, St. Petersburg, 1874 (icon and oklad) Chromolithograph on paper laid down on wood panel. The silver-gilt oklad with repoussé and engraved decoration, set with paste. Hallmarked with city mark, assay master's mark, 84 standard and maker's mark 'SG' in Cyrillic. Minor losses. On the reverse, old label: 'Greek Mother of God. Feast day on May 12.' As well as an overpainted inscription: 'Archpriest of the Trinity Petrovsky Cathedral Alexei Lavrovsky' and 'In St. Petersburg.' Minor paint losses. Archpriest Alexei Alexeyevich Lavrovsky (1810-1896) was a clergyman of the Russian Orthodox Church in St. Petersburg. At the Trinity Cathedral on the Petersburg Side, he served as rector from 1867 onward and was active as a catechist in the years 1873-1874 and 1876.
