A LARGE AND RARE FOUR-PARTITE ICON SHOWING THE CRUCIFIXION, THE MOTHER OF GOD 'JOY OF ALL WHO GRIEVE', THE MOTHER OF GOD 'THE LIFE-GIVING SOURCE', THE BOGOLUBSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD AND THE SEVEN SLEEPERS OF EPHESUS North Russian, 2nd half of the 18th century Tempera on wood panel. The haloes made of silver, covered by a golden lacquer. Minor areas of retouching. 52.2 × 43 cm. Iconographically rich composition with the Crucifixion of Christ at the center, flanked by the Mother of God and the Evangelist John. Additional scenes of the Passion are depicted in the terminals and along the beams of the Cross, including the Agony in the Garden, the Arrest, the Flagellation, the Carrying of the Cross, and the Entombment. The surrounding panels present further saints and Marian representations, forming a complex theological program that unites suffering, redemption, and the promise of salvation. Probably executed in a high-quality workshop in Northern Russia, possibly in the circle of the Solovki Monastery.
