A VERY LARGE ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD 'UMILENIE' WITH A FINE SILVER-GILT OKLAD Russian, circa 1874 (icon), Russian, Moscow, Antip Ivanovitch Kuzmitchev, 1874 (oklad) Oil on wood panel with velvet backing. A very large-format icon with an elaborately decorated oklad in gilt silver: the background is engraved in a radiating pattern, the borders are finely engraved with foliate scrolls, and the corners are adorned with cast floral appliqués. Marked with city hallmark, assayer's mark, 84 standard and master's mark 'A.I.K.' in Cyrillic. Minor paint blinsterings, partially restored. 54.5 x 41 cm.
