A VERY LARGE AND RARE ICON SHOWING THE LAST JUDGEMENT Russian, Palekh, circa 1800 Tempera on wood panel. The complex iconographic composition based on the Old and New Testament, in the centre Jesus Christ depicted as the Judge of mankind, flanked by the Mother of God and St. John the Baptist, at his feet Adam and Eve, below two angels preparing the Throne for the Second Coming. In the upper section Lord Sabaoth surrounded by angels, in the lower section a snake with roundels some inscribed with the name of a sin. A lower tier with scenes illustrating the torment of sinners in hell. At the bottom right the blazing inferno of hell, in the lower left corner saints standing in row to enter the garden of Paradise. With further explanatory inscriptions on the borders. The border and vertical crack partially restored. 52 x 43.5 cm.
