A LARGE AND RARE ICON SHOWING CHRIST 'ONLY BEGOTTEN SON' Russian, Vyg region, circa 1800 Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The panel depicting Christ Emmanuel enthroned in the centre, surrounded by a large aureole, above are the Trinity and God Sabaoth with two angels to the left and to the right. In the lower right a triumphant skeleton holding a scythe astride an apocalyptic beast symbolising Death, a victorious Christ dressed in armour opposite. Minor areas of retouching. 44.4 x 37.8 cm.
