Description
A LARGE ICON SHOWING CHRIST 'KING OF KINGS' WITH AN OKLAD Russian, Moscow, Follower of the Armoury Chamber, 18th century (icon), Russian, late 18th century (oklad) Tempera on wood panel, partially gilded. The brass oklad repoussé. The 'King of Kings' icon is an important representation of Christ as the almighty ruler and King of Heaven and Earth. In this composition, Christ is majestically enthroned, holding a sceptre in one hand and blessing the world with the other. His title 'King of Kings' emphasises his absolute authority over all earthly and heavenly powers. Originating in the Orthodox tradition, this designation underscores Christ's divine sovereignty over temporal rulers, including the Russian tsars, who were regarded as earthly representatives of the divine order. The icon thus served not only as a religious image but also as a symbol of the close relationship between Church and State in Orthodox Russia. The border and background have been stripped down to the levkas, restorations. 54 x 44 cm.
